I’m a big, big fan of the partnership between coffee shops and breweries. Brewery taprooms are spacious and tend to be wide open in the mornings, so it makes perfect sense to let a coffee shop operate there. I love, for instance, the Roosevelt Coffeehouse inside Olentangy River Brewing.
Well, now another one has entered the game: Westerville’s Java Central Coffee Roasters opened a coffee shop inside Zaftig’s Italian Village brewpub. The pub, a companion to Zaftig’s Worthington brewery and taproom, sits on the corner of Summit and Fifth. There’s free parking in the lot behind the building, and city parking all along Summit just south of the intersection.
The coffee shop is currently open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can order right at the counter, where they also serve whole beans and local baked goods.
Why do breweries work so well with coffee shops? Loads of space!
I love working in coffee shops regularly, and I appreciate the space to spread out, hold meetings, and still find some privacy to work. Zaftig features long tables with cab chairs, high-backed booths, bar seats, even a private meeting room.
Their menu features drip coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, specialty lattes, tea, chai, hot chocolate. Get a look at the full coffee menu here.
You can also pick up a bag or two of Java Central’s roasts.
I’ve sampled my way through a few items on the menu, enjoying a strawberry Nutella pop tart (I forgot the name of which local bakery made them) and a cardamom rose latte.
Really enjoyed the cortado, too.
And the handled glass serving cup.
Another benefit of a coffee shop housed in an existing brewery or pub? A full kitchen at their disposal! Zaftig started offering a specialty breakfast menu to go with your coffee and pastries.
Currently the menu consists of:
- A bagel with cream cheese
- Potato pancakes
- A Beyond Breakfast sandwich
- Sausage, egg, and cheese-stuffed biscuit
- Breakfast burrito
- Bacon, egg, and cheese bagel
I’ve tasted the potato pancakes – crispy and salty, with a side of Zaftig’s zesty signature sauce – and the breakfast burrito. It’s stuffed and compact, a little greasy at the bottom, but still tastes great.
If you need a new place to work from home, a spot just to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee, or a new place for breakfast – consider Java Central’s new shop inside Zaftig!
