I’ve been to the Bexley Coffee Shop a couple times in its past iteration. The previous owners Paulette and Sean Sullivan had built it up over five years, making it a cozy little neighborhood stop in Bexley. They roasted their own coffee, served up snacks, and even started Ripple Coffee, a roasting operation that sources beans from women farmers. Late last year they announced they were moving south (but Ripple Coffee is still going! EDIT: Ripple seems to have ceased operations) and handing the shop over to new owners.

This year has seen the rebirth of the shop under owners Nikki Ore and Maria Schlegel, and they’ve transformed it from a Bexley neighborhood destination to a city-wide one. If you’ve been in the shop before, you’ll notice an immediate difference. It’s been give a fresh coat of bright blue paint and cozy new tables, chairs, and decorations.

The menu has been expanded, too. There are espresso drinks; hot, iced, or frozen coffees; smoothies; a kid’s menu; and snacks.

They’re using Thunderkiss Coffee; it was Jason who first told me about the shop’s revamp. You can buy whole beans at the shop, too. Jason even makes some specialty roasts for them.

There’s also a great tea list.

Everything I’ve had from the coffee side of things has been great, especially the cappucino and cortado, but the eats are what really put them over the top. They’re baking cookies, quiche, scones, cinnamon rolls, and more in house. They make daily soups, too, with a goal of adding sandwiches and more in the future.

Then they wisely put it all on display to tempt you.

So far we’ve had big cheddar bacon scones.

Coffee cake and cappuccinos.

Giant cookie bars.

And then there are the coffee bombs. Oh, the coffee bombs. Columbus, I’ve discovered your new craving.

The coffee bombs are available on Tuesdays and Fridays. They’re like little muffins, made with plenty of butter and espresso, then rolled in a cinnamon sugar. They’re perfectly soft, with a slight bitterness of the espresso to balance the sweet edge. On our last visit we gobbled up two without thinking.

The quiche is another stand-out. Big slices of fluffy eggs, cheddar and bacon (in this case), and a crispy crust.

A much-loved coffee shop doesn’t happen overnight, and the Sullivans spent five years making it a favorite place in Bexley, but I think Nikki and Maria are taking it to a whole new level with their re-design, new menu, and feature on Thunderkiss Coffee. I think everyone needs to get over there stat, at the very least for a coffee bomb and a cortado.
