Brioso Coffee, which began life as Cafe Brioso, is one of the city’s longest-running coffee shops and roasters. Jeff Davis started it in 2001 on the northeast corner of Gay and High Streets, where they’ve been a regular stop for coffee enthusiasts and the downtown working crowd.
They added a second coffee shop and moved the roastery to East Long Street downtown a few years ago, and now their flagship store has gotten a fresh start with a catty corner move to the southwest corner of Gay and High!
You can find the new shop in the Citizens Bank building, which also houses Veritas and The Citizens Trust. (So, start with coffee, and then make your way to cocktails and dinner…)
While the new shop is smaller than the old one, it’s bright and clean. You can order at the counter; there’s a small collection of two- and four-tops lining the windows.
You can also pick up whole beans, T-shirts, mugs, and other swag.
Brioso’s menu covers brewed coffee, pour overs, and espresso drinks. They usually have a selection of locally made pastries, cookies, and bagels on hand, too.
And they feature a couple seasonal creations, plus a few flavored lattes.
One of my personal favorites (pictured here at the Long Street location) is the Ohio maple latte, made with espresso, Hartzler Dairy milk, and Ohio maple syrup. It’s sweet but a little smoky and earthy.
Their espresso service is always strong.
Both locations feature a happy hour every Monday-Friday from 2-4 p.m., where espresso and brewed coffee is only $1. They appreciate cash if you’re stopping in for one of those!
With the new location comes updated branding. Brioso now sports the tagline “Mean coffee for nice people.”
