Cafe Brioso is one of the mainstays of Columbus coffee, not only serving coffee to downtown denizens from their Gay Street location, but also roasting coffees for customers and local restaurants, and leading the way with classes, tours, and other interactive events. As part of their continued growth, they opened a larger roasting facility and second coffee shop on East Long Street downtown, called the Brioso Roastery.
They still operate as a coffee shop with a full selection of espresso drinks, brewed coffees, and snacks. There are also plenty of big tables and spots for meeting or working (hint to all you freelance folks).
Like the Gay Street shop, they offer rotating selections of pour overs, blossom, and cold brew.
I love their Ohio Maple Latte, built on their Espresso Milano blend and flavored with a touch of maple syrup.
The Roastery doesn’t have a full kitchen to do soups and sandwiches like the original location, but they still offer snacks like muffins, scones, and biscotti.
While they’re still roasting at Gay Street (side note: it makes downtown smell great), they’ve upgraded with a bigger roaster at the new shop to meet demand. So if you visit the shop, you’ll get to see them at work.
You can also buy whole beans for home brewing.
If you know Brioso, you know they’re passionate about coffee and about educating coffee consumers. I got to witness that in action recently when leading a custom breakfast tour for Columbus Food Adventures. J.J. from Brioso (known as their “Coffee Evangelist”) walked the group through a coffee tasting.
So there you have it! Coffee-lovers, you’ve got a new shop to add your list. And anyone who’s new to coffee: make sure you visit to get a taste of the great coffee our city has to offer.
