We often describe Ocracoke Island, North Carolina – one of the islands of the Outer Banks – as our happy place. Ocracoke is a long, narrow island, 13 miles of which is National Seashore, with a small village on the southern end. And in that village is the best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had: Eduardo’s Taco Stand.

Eduardo’s is a beloved fixture of Ocracoke. It sits on the main drag, Irvin Garrish Highway, near the north end of town. They started as a smaller truck across the street that was sadly washed away by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. But Eduardo and his family came back bigger and better with a new trailer on an expanded lot.

He does excellent tacos, tortas, and other delights throughout the day, but breakfast is served from 8-11 a.m. generally (keep an eye on Facebook for his daily updates). The big feature is the rolled tacos and burritos, but he features bowls, hotcakes, and other specials.

This is the face of a guy who’s enjoying the best thing on the menu: the Seafood Hot Mess burrito.

The burrito lives up to its name fully: it’s spicy and served piping hot, loaded with seafood, and you’ll gleefully make a mess eating it.

Eduardo generously loads the Seafood Hot Mess with shrimp and scallops alongside potatoes, bacon, fried egg, chorizo, avocado, refried beans, queso fresco, a Oaxacan cheese, plus jalapenos and a habanero salsa. He rolls the burrito tightly and grills it all together. All the ingredients gel perfectly. It’s super filling, spicy, and just a delight to eat.

If the burrito isn’t quite your thing, don’t skip the rolled tacos. I love the format of scrambled eggs with bacon, chorizo, veggies, or beans, tightly rolled and grilled up.

We’ve had plenty of other good meals there, too! So even if you miss breakfast, be sure to visit Eduardo and his team for lunch.

He occasionally tinkers and shares different specials.

On one visit he was playing with breakfast tostadas.

He also jars and sells this salsas. In fact, next to the truck is a small stand with T-shirts and other Eduardo’s swag.

In the yard in front of the truck is a collection of shaded picnic tables with seasonal decor.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to say hi to the man himself!
