Based out of Dayton and first opened in 1973, Boston Stoker is one of those long-running coffee roasters that’s been serving quality coffee before it was cool. The coffee roaster (and occasional cigar purveyor) is still based in Dayton and has grown to multiple locations around western Ohio.
They first entered the Columbus market in 2013 with a shop on Neil Avenue on Ohio State’s campus before moving that down the street to the Thurber Village shopping center. With that area being redeveloped, they closed that store and in 2022 moved into the former Luck Bros shop in Grandview.
I’ve always loved this space and I’m glad there’s a coffee shop in it once again. It’s long and narrow, with a coffee bar to one side, some retail shelves, then a collection of tables, couches, and chairs throughout.
Similar to other long-running shops like Crimson Cup, Boston Stoker walks the line between expert third wave coffee (great espresso, pour overs, French press, Chemex) and more “mainstream” coffee shops with flavored lattes, frozen drinks, tea, sandwiches, and snacks.
My preference is always to hit the espresso bar, and I’m happy to say I’ve been pleased with the coffee I’ve gotten there.
Boston Stoker still captures that feel of 90s coffeehouses, with mis-matched furniture, couches, rugs.
They have a large table toward the back, plus a few two-tops and other plush chairs, but I do love the front corners near the windows.
While you’re there you can purchase beans (include some Luck Bros roasts!), brewing equipment, mugs. There’s even a small humidor with cigars.
Boston Stoker has kept its footing in Columbus, and even has a second location coming to Shawnee Hills sometime this year.
