After discovering and loving The Pancake House in Lewis Center a couple months back, I learned that it had the same owners as the tiny Pancake House location in Westerville. It had been a few years since I visited there, when it lived under previous ownership. Our experience then was so-so (it’s never a good sign when a place called The Pancake House didn’t do pancakes very well), but we really loved the Lewis Center spot, so clearly the new owners had made some upgrades in Westerville, too.

(P.S. Don’t confuse this place with The Original Pancake House, a national chain with local owners, with locations in Westerville and Upper Arlington.)

While the Lewis Center location is wide and spacious, the Westerville branch is a simple squat-roofed, one-room affair, with a tall counter (weirdly tall – even at 6’2″ I was reaching my elbows up to lean them on the counter), an open kitchen, a row of booths, and one large table.

But the menu is the same as the Lewis Center version, and they churn out some really terrific breakfasts. Not only are the pancakes great, but they feature some Latin-inspired breakfasts: a Venezuelan brunch with arepas, breakfast tamales, huevos rancheros.

We’ve really loved their chorizo, especially with a side of hash browns.

Big, hearty omelets.

A crispy, house-made corned beef hash.

And you can’t leave The Pancake House without trying a pancake, right? A reader had suggested their churro pancake, which is indeed, a buttermilk pancake that gets deep-fried, drizzled with dulce de leche, and for good measure, dusted with powdered sugar. It tastes exactly as it sounds – like having funnel cake for breakfast.

Just like the Lewis Center location, The Pancake House in Westerville is charming and easy to love: family-run, cozy space, interesting breakfasts. And they do their namesake dish proud.
