Breweries and brunch are a winning combination in my book, especially those that include big outdoor spaces. So we were pretty excited when the folks from the new 1487 Brewery in Plain City invited us to try their Sunday brunch.

1487 inhabits a former Napa Auto Parts store, which means the converted space features plenty of room inside and out. Inside the main room sits the bar, a retail counter, and plenty of big tables. And garage door opens on to…

…a size-able covered patio and biergarten.

As the name indicates, 1487 was inspired by owner Ben King’s travels to Germany, where he fell in love with Bavarian biergartens. His brewery seeks to replicate that, with easy-drinking German brews on tap and plentiful al fresco seating.

1487 of course leans heavily into German styles, although extended offerings like IPAs and stouts surface, too.

I sampled a quartet of brews: the crisp and light-bodied Helles, the hazy and banana-heavy Hefeweizen, the clean and lightly sweet Kölsch, and the Roggenbier, similar to the Hefe but with a bite of rye. I enjoyed each one – they were all the type of easy-drinking beers you love to sip on a patio, and all wonderfully complemented the brunch.

Their regular menu features classic bar bites: wings, cheese curds, burgers, salads, reubens, fish and chips. Of course, German staples appear, too, like bratwurst, pretzels, potato salad, schnitzel.

The Sunday brunch menu riffs on the main menu with additions like a breakfast burger, eggs benedict, steak and egg bake, and potato pancakes mixed with corned beef hash.

For Bloody Mary fans, they’ll find 1487’s offering a sure-fire winner. They also feature mimosas and the Fanny Pack: vodka, lime juice, Dragonberry, and Sprite.

We started with the pretzel (served with beer cheese and a terrific whole grain mustard), plus a bowl of crispy, gooey cheese curds.

Kudos to Chef Melissa on both the construction and the plating of her brunch dishes.

Our quartet of dishes covered the brunch highlights. All of them were expertly presented and composed:

  • The corned beef hash potato pancake blends the two main components in a small cast iron pan, topped with a fried egg and served with a burnt butter thyme applesauce and mustard creme, plus a side salad.
  • The beautiful eggs benedict layers an English muffin with a zesty pepper jam, slice of fried bologna, poached egg, and a terrific hollandaise, accompanied by roasted asparagus and a side salad.
  • The breakfast burger is a simple but easy-to-love combination. It’s essentially a cheeseburger with fried egg and a scoop of their pork sausage beer cheese. And of course we ordered tots as the side. (“Give me some of your tots!”)
  • The steak and egg bake is an interesting way to deliver the classic breakfast combo. It uses marinated steak tips and an egg, mushroom, and spinach bake. All nicely put together, although a little overpowered by the sweet veal demi-glace.

All-told, an excellent brunch experience, from the food to the drinks to the outdoor digs. Sundays from 1-4 p.m. they feature live music on the patio, too. The sound carries pretty far, so if you’re there for conversation, don’t sit too close.

Although I’ve been slow to collect my Columbus Ale Trail stamps this year, I remembered my booklet and snagged a stamp at 1487. The brewery also sells beer to go in crowlers and growlers, and they graciously offered a couple crowlers – I selected the bloody orange IPA and Dunkelweizen to take home.

Thanks to 1487 Brewery for inviting us out!
