A Stay in The Manor at The Mohicans

February 16, 2021

One of the (pre-pandemic) highlights of last year was our stay in a treehouse at The Mohicans. The folks from The Mohicans in Glenmont, Ohio operate a stunning wedding venue with a connected series of cabins and treehouses, all tucked beautifully in the woods.

They kindly hosted us last year in El Castillo, one of their newer treehouses, and earlier this year they reached out about hosting us in one of their newest properties: The Manor. So we packed up the boys and brought some close friends within our quarantine bubble along for a quiet weekend away!

The Manor is a restored 200-year-old cabin with a contemporary addition. It’s a beautiful marriage of rustic cabin living with all the modern amenities.

The Manor features three bedrooms and three full bathrooms: two rooms with king beds, and one room with a pair of queens. They’re nicely appointed and comfortable, with fun details like a kettle and French press kit in the bedroom.

All throughout the house you can see the transitions from the original cabin to the modern addition.

There are large common areas, like a living room with old stone fireplace (which isn’t operational), a well-equipped modern kitchen, sitting areas, and a dining room table that seats twelve.

The cabin sits on a hillside overlooking the surrounding woods and farmland. Next to it is a second structure that they seem to be renovating into more living quarters. I also spied a collection of Wooster paving bricks out back.

When we visited last year, we got to hang with chef Drew Slane, who runs the kitchens at the wedding venue and at their upcoming catering arm, Treehouse Provisions in Cleveland.

Chef Drew produces some pretty amazing food. Last year we watched him whip up wings, pork chops, pasta, roast beef – all memorable.

He kindly insisted on dropping off dinner with us at The Manor, so we got another taste of his work, from fall-off-the-bone Peruvian chicken to a vegan red curry, roasted veggies to short rib bolognese.

We made a point to explore the area around the Manor, hiking up the hillside through some nearby fields, spotting an oil well and an old deer blind, and enjoying the changing sky.

Because it was a mixture of kids and adults on the trip, we planned ahead by bringing games, crafts, and other activities. Our friends had been gifted a large Lego set that was a little too complex for their younger kids, so they kindly brought it along and let Will have at it. He was in heaven, spending a total of seven-and-a-half hours over the weekend putting together the Avengers’ helicarrier, a nearly 3000 piece set!

The Mohicans are a convenient 15 minute drive away from Mohican State Park, so we spent part of an afternoon exploring some of the shorter trails and sites. This was our first time really visiting the park, and we were floored at the scenic views and the multitude of trails, including bridle trails, mountain biking trails, and snowmobile trails.

We enjoyed the views at the Clear Fork Gorge overlook and hiked a few of the trails nearby, spotted the fire tower, and crossed the covered bridge. All beautiful, even in the depths of winter.

Although I was not-so-secretly disappointed the fire tower was closed for the season. Usually you can climb the many stairs to enjoy unobstructed views of the park. My whole goal in life, my wife jokes, is to climb the highest spot – a tower, a building, a hill – in any area and just look down on it all.

Back at the cabin, we built a fire in the firepit out back and roasted s’mores after the sun went down.

The next morning we awoke to a new view of the cabin, with a few inches of snow having fallen overnight. It highlighted the coziness of the cabin while we made breakfast and coffee.

Then we took advantage of the new-fallen snow to go sledding on the hill and savor the quiet of a walk in the woods.

I’m a big believer in forest-bathing, the Japanese practice of immersing yourself in the quiet of the woods. And something about snowy pine trees creaking in the winter wind offered just that sort of calming respite.

Thanks to the folks from The Mohicans for sharing their newest property with us! It made for a delightfully cozy stay in the woods, and we can’t wait to come back.
