We’re always game for more donuts, right? Especially locally owned, right?

The big trend in donuts right now (I can’t believe I got to write that phrase) is the donut shops that create one base type and then let you glaze, drizzle, and crumble almost anything you want over them. See: Duck Donuts; The Little Donut Shop; Peace, Love, & Little Donuts; Daylight Donuts, Dragon Donuts.

Some of these places are better than others. Some are locally owned one-offs, some are franchises. But they’re fun to try, and while my heart and stomach usually lie with classic pastries from old school donut shops, I’m always game for tackling new shops, especially ones with local owners.

So with a free night to spare, the boys and I found ourselves near Gahanna on Hamilton Road to visit Donna’s Delicious Dozen. Donna’s is a family-run operation. We got to meet owner Traci, who said the shop is named after her grandmother.

The space is brightly lit and marked with yellow, orange, turquoise, and pink accents. There’s a big menu on the wall to help you make decisions.

Like similar donut places, you can build your own donut from different icings, glazes, drizzles, and toppings. Or you can choose from almost 20 set flavors, including seasonal specials.

And then you can watch them set to work frying, dipping, drizzling, and topping your donuts.

There are glass dividers that let you observe the whole process.

We ordered eight of the donuts, which are smaller-sized. This is probably good, as the finished product is pretty sweet.

We mixed things up a bit:

  • It’s All About the Bacon
  • The S’more
  • Cinnamon Roll Crunch
  • Oh We Oh – Ooreo
  • Apple Butter Crumb Cake (seasonal)
  • Pumpkin Pie (seasonal)
  • Plus two build-your-own donuts for the boys

All in all, they’re fun to eat! We really loved the two seasonal donuts especially.

These types of donuts tend to be colorful and over-the-top sweet, but it’s a fun outing, especially as a family, and we’ll choose to support local and family-owned whenever we can!
