Last month on assignment for the Dispatch, we explored a brunch spot in our new neighborhood: Over the Counter, located in the Sharon Square shopping center just south of Old Worthington, and across the street from Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza. You can read my review in the Dispatch here. We always like to share our own photos and thoughts on the experience.
Over the Counter’s space seems narrow at first, but it extends pretty far back into the building, and includes a good-sized patio out front. A long bar fills the right side, while the left is lined with two- and four-top tables.
There’s a little lounge area with plush leather seats up front.
The overall decorative touches read as a slightly upscale diner, but with TVs. Note the countertops, much like the old school lunch counters.
Over the Counter has a small but reliable beer selection, as well as a full range of cocktails. We found the Bloody Mary to be pretty spot-on.
The strawberry and donut kebabs make for a pretty fun start. They come out hot from the fryer, and are soft, cakey, and nicely dusted with sugar. They’re not greasy, and would be a fairly light treat if you don’t dunk them in the orange liqueur cream cheese.
The eggs benedict is also pretty well exectued. They feature three versions: traditional, black bean, and Californian. We chose the Californian: avocado, tomato, and hollandaise.
You can also build your own omelet or skillet. We created a skillet with peppers, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and mushrooms. With eggs and toast, the portion is pretty generous.
Props to the chicken and waffles, too. The waffles were good and crispy, and the chicken was tender. The herbs in the crust almost overwhelmed the sweet elements, but overall it worked.
Our favorite bite of the meal was the pesto egg sandwich. It layers bacon, provolone, and a couple properly scrambled eggs with a pesto aioli.
The space lends itself pretty well to bigger groups, too, if you’re going with the family or a crowd of friends.
We’re glad to have finally been to Over the Counter, and are especially excited to have them in the neighborhood. We’ll certainly be back for brunch, not to mention lunch or dinner.
