We’ve long been fans of Duck Donuts, making it a regular stop when vacationing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Duck Donuts originated there in the town of Duck, and has grown its reach through franchises in multiple states. We were plenty excited when a local Duck Donuts opened in Westerville, and pleased to see a recent expansion to Dublin.
The Dublin Duck Donuts is much larger than the Westerville stop.
Not only is the main dining room more spacious, but they offer special event space in the back.
Duck Donuts hits on the trend of made-to-order donuts, much like Peace, Love, & Little Donuts, The Donut Experiment, Little Donut Shop, and others. They fry up a base donut, then top it with your choice of confections.
The success of these types of donut places lies in the quality of the donut. If the base is dry or flavorless, it doesn’t matter how many toppings you add. Fortunately, Duck Donuts is, for me, the leader of the pack. Their base donut is a spongy, lightly sweet cake donut with a hint of vanilla. It’s best when it’s warm. (It’s also at its messiest, then, so have napkins ready.)
You can order any amount of donuts, from a single sweet to dozens. They have pre-set flavors, or you can customize them.
A couple fryers are pumping out the donuts pretty consistently, and once you place your order, an employee grabs a set of donuts and begins dipping, sprinkling, powdering, and drizzling away.
The flavors range from simple glazes to mounds of crushed cookies, powdered sugar, crumbled bacon, and just about anything you can imagine. You can get as crazy or cautious as you like.
The visits to Duck Donuts in North Carolina lose some of their glamor, now that we have it readily available here at home. But that doesn’t diminish the fun of going there to enjoy the cute branding and some easy-to-love donuts.
