I’ve long been a fan of Buckeye Donuts near campus, and it seems like most people know about the companion store on South High Street. The two are associated, but only by name; they were business partners a couple decades ago, and while the two businesses are now separate entities (but on good terms), there’s obvious overlap in the name, style, and recipes.

The south side Buckeye Donuts focuses primarily on donuts and coffee – no breakfast sandwiches, tater tots, gyros, etc. like the campus location.

The space is classic old school donut joint: pink-lined shelves holding wire trays of donuts, an old letter menu on the wall, a low counter with scarlet and gray stools.

There’s some overlap on the donut menus. The campus location plays around with more crazy ingredients (think maple bacon longjohns), while the south side store excels at the old favorites.

You’ll find everything from cake and yeast-raised donuts, to trays of glazed twists and longjohns.

There are other additions that you won’t find up north, like devil’s food cake with white icing, lemon bismarks, whole wheat donuts.

The boys and I went on any exploratory visit on a recent day off school. They went for the devil’s food cake (chocolate with chocolate icing) and the buttermilk with frosting and Halloween sprinkles.

I’m partial to French crullers, which are twisted and glazed yeast donuts. I love their texture: light and airy but substantial enough that you still feel like you’re eating a donut.

We grabbed a couple seats at the counter and enjoyed.

Every neighborhood needs a good donut joint, and this Buckeye Donuts serves the south side well. Bonus points that they’re open 24/7, so you can always swing by when you need coffee and dessert.
