Last month the Dispatch sent me on brunch patrol to scope out Milestone 229’s Sunday brunch. You can read my official review of it here. We wanted to share some additional thoughts and photos, so read on!

In the nice months, patio space is at a premium, and nothing beats brunch on a beautiful patio in the spring. Milestone 229 is lucky to have a sweet spot along the Scioto River, where the riverfront was recently completed with all new greenways, bike paths, benches, etc. Milestone itself is a rounded building with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river, and a curving patio surrounding most of it.

So it’s really hard to beat a nice sunny day, sitting under the (well covered) patio, enjoying some brunch. We started our visit with a couple Bloody Marys and a beer. Milestone is owned by the same folks behind the Columbus Brewing Company Restaurant; the Bloody Marys at CBC are great, and the Milestone menu is similar. Also: solid beer selection.

The Sunday brunch menu features about nine items plus appetizers. There’s an element of fun to most dishes, like the Homer’s French Toast. The French toast itself is a thick “donut bread pudding” that’s fried like French toast then topped with a maple bourbon glaze, bacon, and over easy eggs. Our 7-year-old is a French toast connoisseur, and he deemed this very worthy.

Our youngest opted for classic mac and cheese. The kid’s menu, by the way, is pretty inventive. It includes grilled cheese, pizza, and a cheeseburger, but also has kiddos fish & chips, fried shrimp, and an Elvis-themed sandwich with peanut butter, banana, and honey.

The beef brisket hash is a hefty portion of the brisket mixed with some decent potatoes, plus onion, pepper, cheddar, Brussels sprouts (yes to these!), and a very nice bearnaise sauce in place of the the traditional hollandaise.

Same for the eggs benedict. It uses that bernaise and adds in asparagus and a cheddar biscuit. Nicely executed.

And if you’re really in the mood for something hearty, there’s the biscuits & gravy. Big chunky gravy that’s nicely seasoned, over easy eggs, and their house breakfast sausage over biscuits.

Like I said, patio space can be a premium, and Milestone was packed when we visited. It’s best to make a reservation or be prepared to wait. It took a while to get our food, too, although we visited on their first patio brunch of the year (which we didn’t know beforehand).

This meal was covered by the Dispatch as part of a review. Photos and opinions here are my own.
