If you follow the Columbus culinary scene on instagram at all, you most likely have seen Kittie’s Cakes there. They do an excellent job of consistently posting their daily specials, with photos that easily entice you to come in.
After months of watching these photos scroll by on my phone, we finally stopped in during a Saturday morning family breakfast blitz (note to self: plan an event using that title). Kittie’s is nicely situated on Third St. in German Village, a little local bakery full of sweets and coffee for nearby residents. It’s just down the street from Katzinger’s Deli.
The space is big, although the customer area is limited to the front of the shop. There you’re faced with display cases laden with scones, rolls, cupcakes, cookies.
All of it can be easily justified as breakfast, although anything with “breakfast” in the title easily qualms any misgivings about having cake in the morning.
Kittie’s also serves up coffee from Portland’s Stumptown, both hot and iced.
One wall of Kittie’s is full of framed photos and phrases. One of them utters one of the truest and most beautiful phrases in the English language. It reminds me of this Jim Gaffigan sketch.
Also, this: breakfast cake. A big slice of Kittie’s breakfast cake. It’s a meal unto itself.
And a mixed berry scone, with a soft texture nicely balanced with the tart berries to keepit from getting too sweet.
Enticed by the photos? It’s time to stop in. It’s always worth supporting little neighborhood bakeries!
