In mid-January Kura Revolving Sushi Bar opened its first Ohio location, just outside Polaris Fashion Place in Columbus! The Japanese chain first opened in 1977 and now boasts more than 500 locations across the world.
The Columbus store has been immensely popular since it opened, with typical wait times around dinner topping 2-3 hours at times.
We visited the Pittsburgh location of Kura last fall and had a fun time with it. Guests sign in at a small computer at the front door, where they’re given an estimated wait time.
From what we’ve seen of two locations, Kura’s spaces are designed pretty similarly, with rows of booths tightly packed together. The booths seat up to four people, and each one is fed by a series of conveyor belts that loop around the restaurant. A team of chefs works furiously in the back making sushi and plating it.
Kura’s gimmick is that sushi is delivered table side by a never-ending conveyor belt.
The plates roll by in pairs, with little signs announcing each one. If you’re curious about one, just pop the plate out of the little covered holder and enjoy!
If it’s your first time, the server will walk you through the process of pricing, how to properly snag plates, and how to order drinks, desserts, and other dishes through the screen above your table.
At the Columbus location, all sushi plates on the conveyor belt are $3.40. Each one contains 2-3 pieces, depending on the size. It can add up quickly, especially if you’re with a group (or have hungry teens like us!).
When you’re done with each plate, you slide it into a slot underneath the conveyor belt, and it’s counted toward your total on the screen.
For an added bit of fun, drinks are delivered by robot! They scoot around the space playing music and making little announcements.
The screen above your table features fun animations and dispenses toys when you hit a certain number of plates.
You can also use it to order a specific type of sushi or extras like dumplings, ramen, and more. We wanted to try some dumplings and fried chicken.
And on top of all the sushi coming by, you’ll find desserts like custard tarts and even slices of cheesecake.
Kura can be a little overwhelming and overstimulating, but it’s certainly a fun experience, especially with a group. Just expect the longer wait times, particularly around dinner and on weekends! It’d be smart to check in early, then go hit the mall, grab a drink somewhere, and wait for your table to open up.
