Smashburgers and Axe Throwing at Ash & Em Eatery

January 31, 2024

What can be better than smashburgers, fries, arcade games, and axe throwing? Well, now you can find it all together under one roof since Ash & Em Eatery moved across the street into the Columbus Axe Throwing building on South High Street.

Those familiar with the space at 560 S. High St. will know its history as the former Three Sheets bar where Preston’s Burgers got its start on the second floor. Now the space has been transformed. When you step through the front door you’re greeted with a small arcade.

You’ll find the bar in the usual spot, too.

And you’ll also discover the space has been partly filled with a collection of axe throwing lanes!

Over the past couple months, Ash & Em Eatery moved from Classic’s Victory’s Sports Bar across the street into the Columbus Axe Throwing space. The burger pop-up and axe throwing businesses are under the same ownership, so it made sense to combine the two!

Guests can come just for burgers and fries, or combine a meal with time in the axe throwing lanes. To order food, you just head upstairs to the second level.

You can order from Ash & Em at the windows upstairs, where you get a full view of the menu.

Ash & Em serves up classic bar food: wings, fried apps, smashburgers, hot dogs, fries.

We can attest to the quality of the fried pickles.

And the cheese curds!

Ash & Em’s OG smashed burger is the classic combination: a patty layered with American cheese, then topped with crispy lettuce, red onion, pickle, and their house sauce. It has everything you want in a classic smashburger. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

I really dug the bacon cheddar smashed burger, which layers on bacon, cheddar, lettuce, onion jam, and a Carolina Gold sauce.

Kudos to the Nashville hot chicken sandwich with lettuce and bread & butter pickles.

We dug the sides of fries as well, from the shoestring to the garlic parmesan to the Cajun. Very crispy and well seasoned.

Of course, it all pairs well with a bit of axe throwing! Eating and axe throwing at the same time are a little tricky – there’s not tons of bar space for you food – but it still makes for a fun experience.

Columbus Axe Throwing’s rates run $25/hour per person. Each lane can accommodate up to seven people, and it’s open to anyone 12 and up. They’ll also give you some quick instruction if you’ve never done axe throwing before.

Axe throwing is loads of fun and fairly easy to learn! They provide you with scoresheets to track your players, just a round of bowling.

There are lanes both upstairs and downstairs.

And in-between games – or if you’re not signed up for axe throwing – you can hit up the free arcade games on both levels!

The food at Ash & Em is available for carryout or dine-in, so even if you’re not throwing, you can still kick back with some terrific smashburgers and sides!

Ash & Em Eatery is open:
Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight
Saturday, noon to midnight
Sunday, 1-8 p.m.
