Like many Columbus folks, we were saddened when Fortune Chinese Restaurant closed a few years back. We have many, many fond memories of quiet lunches there, celebrating big dinners with out-of-town guests. But the entire shopping center was razed and rebuilt a couple years ago. It’s now home to the delightful Tous Les Jours Bakery & Cafe, and even better… the owners of Fortune have returned with a new eatery!
Chuan Jiang Hao Zi sits on the western side of the new center, facing Ackerman Road. A little more stark and bright, it maybe doesn’t have the charm of the old space, but I’m happy to say the food and service are top-notch. The menu design, types of dishes, and general layout of the restaurant have heavy echos of ChiliSpot over on Kenny and Henderson.
We visited for dinner on Christmas Eve and enjoyed a delightful mix of new and familiar dishes, some more traditional Chinese and some the standard American Chinese restaurant fare. We started first with the wontons in chili oil, always one of my favorites.
I tasted a cup of egg drop soup as well.
One of our favorites at modern Chinese restaurants at the wok-fired string beans. Always such lovely flavor.
Our boys will never say no to General Tso’s chicken. This version was nice and crispy.
And it’s hard to turn down a simple but easy-to-love chicken lo mein.
And we always love the Szechuan diced chicken, often described as a crispy, spicy popcorn chicken.
Service at the restaurant was very friendly and lightning fast. It felt like we didn’t wait more than five minutes between placing our order and dishes arriving at the table.
Chuan Jiang Hao Zi is currently open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
