Here in Columbus we enjoy a rich culture of taco tracks. They’re spread throughout the city in neighborhoods, parking lot – some always on the move, many with their regular stations.
We’ve been fans of many over the years, from Taqueria El Fogoncito on the northwest side to Los Guachos‘ truck + brick and mortar locations. But in recent years we’ve grown to think one of the city’s best taco trucks is Los Agavez Taqueria in Clintonville, and they’re slinging our favorite tacos in Columbus: their birria tacos.
Los Agavez was one of the first trucks to introduce Columbus to the growing trend of birria tacos.
So what is birria? Birria is a richly seasoned stew, traditionally made with goat or beef, from the Jalisco region of Mexica. Birria tacos, a form of the dish known as quesabirria, are tacos made with beef birria, cheese, diced onions, and cilantro. The tacos are soaked in the stew before being pressed on the flat top, infusing them with a beautiful orange hue. Like many places, Los Agavez serves the tacos with a cup of the beef consume for dipping your tacos. It’s a delightful, delicious mess to eat.
Los Agavez typically serves their birria tacos Thursdays through Saturdays, and they will sell out. The flavor is just incredible: so rich and wonderfully seasoned, juicy and packed with meat and cheese.
They’re also very filling! I’m used to handling a plate of four tacos easily, but the birria tacos are so much heavier that I often top out at two.
And Los Agavez knocks it out of the park with their full menu. We’d put their al pastor up there amongst the city’s best. It’s great in pastor tacos.
And we’re big fans of the torta with al pastor.
You can get a little glimpse of their full menu above. It spans tacos and burritos, quesadillas, huaraches, alambre, nachos, choripollo. Even a small kid’s menu!
Find Los Agavez parked outside the Super Food Mart on the northeast corner of Pacemont and North High Street in Clintonville. (Long-timers will remember this as the original site of Ray Ray’s Hog Pit and Mya’s Fried Chicken.) The family-run truck is there Monday-Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. (remember, birria typically appears only Thursday-Saturday).
Los Agavez is in regular rotation for us, especially those birria tacos and al pastor torta. We’d highly, highly recommend a visit there soon!
