At the end of August we spent a weekend exploring Lancaster and the surrounding area as guests of Visit Fairfield County. Our final stop over the 48 hours was the perfect capstone of Sunday brunch at JB’s Downtown Grill in Lancaster itself.

JB’s is owned by Jamie and Beth Brumbaugh. Beth is a nurse and Jamie has a long history as an executive chef, and they opened their dream restaurant in 2018 in downtown Lancaster.

The long, narrow space occupies two storefronts, with original wooden floors, exposed brick walls, tables covered in checkered tablecloths. They even have a few patio tables out front.

Together, they provide a wonderfully warm welcome to their customers, and the same care and attention extends to their food. Jamie does everything from scratch, and the result is a collection of hearty breakfasts that are thoughtfully composed and just fun to eat.

Our server recommended starting with a cinnamon roll: soft, warm, very buttery – and quickly devoured.

We ordered a good mix from the Sunday brunch menu, covering pretty much all the bases.

Owen loves a good eggs benedict, and JB’s was a prime example of the dish: a halved cheddar chive biscuit topped with two round poached eggs, a terrific Dijon hollandaise, and dusting of paprika. Served with an excellent side of bacon and very crispy and well-seasoned garlic herb home fried potatoes.

Similarly, Will loved his biscuits and gravy: a chunky, nicely seasoned, scratch-made sausage poured over homemade biscuits.

Beth’s veggie omelet combined portabella mushrooms, peppers, onions, and tomatoes, served with a side of their potatoes and a cheddar chive biscuit.

I was in the mood for a breakfast sandwich, and our served recommended the breakfast biscuit: another one of those cheddar chive biscuits filled with fried egg, cheddar, and a choice of bacon, sausage, or chicken tender. She suggested the chicken tender, which is hand-battered in-house. Terrific little combination, and accompanied by the potatoes.

JB’s serves the type of breakfast you just love to eat: colorful, filling, very thoughtfully made. If you’re in the area – or even up for a fun breakfast road trip – definitely put them on your list.
